I STARTLE AWAKE, THE BED groaning in response to some massive shadow coming toward me. I reach for my magic in a panic, but it recognizes him before I do, and a soothing calm slides over my beating heart.

Atlas, still a giant fucking panther, curls up next to me on my bed. He nearly suffocates me trying to maneuver himself around because apparently even king-sized beds aren’t made for asshole elf panthers. Something snaps under the weight of him and I slice a glare in his direction.

“I swear to your damn Realm if you break my bed trying to cuddle with me as a big, fluffy cat, I’ll never forgive you.”

Something akin to a chuckle rumbles from him and I laugh, too. I’m not sure what the hell is going on, but honestly, it feels right and I’m not going to ruin it by asking or letting myself think that this could mean anything.

“This is my preferred form of yours. You’re so soft and quiet,” I say, snuggling into him. A vibrating growl emanates from him, but it’s not threatening. He sniffs my head and I shiver as a tickle trails over me. Satisfied with something, he huffs and rests his massive head next to mine. Every time he breathes, air washes over me.

“Can you not? I can’t sleep with you blow-drying my hair.”

His big cat eyes blink at me once. The bed finally snaps, but only underneath him and he falls to the ground as I scramble to not fall too. He lets out a breathy roar and then nudges me down with him. Before I can smack him for ruining a perfectly good bed, he takes his massive paw and breaks the other side so that the whole thing has collapsed evenly. Pulling the sheet over me with his teeth, he rests his blocky head on my chest—a command to sleep.

I laugh and rub my face in my hands. “How did I get here?” I ask rhetorically.

He opens one eye and stares at me. I know he’s asking himself the same thing.

Lucky for him, I’m too tired to talk anymore, and I quickly fall asleep to the gentle rumble of him purring. It’s fucking weird, but it’s also kind of perfect.

The next morning when I wake up, he’s gone and my bed is fixed. I shake my head, wondering if it was all a dream. My eye catches on a book sitting on my dresser. I walk over to it and read the note written in perfect cursive inside its cover:
